Castro Candaz, Archaeological site in Chantada, Spain

The archaeological complex stands at 319 meters above sea level, featuring ancient defensive structures and settlement remains along the Miño River banks.

The site functioned as a strategic fortified settlement during Roman times, positioned on the Via Bracara Asturicam connecting Braga to Astorga.

Anthropomorphic sarcophagi discovered at Castro Candaz provide evidence of burial practices and social structures of early regional inhabitants.

Visitors can reach the archaeological site through the main road connecting Ourense to Lugo, with local guides available in Chantada municipality.

Roman consul Lucio Cambero established this fortification while managing relations with local tribes who opposed the Roman expansion in the region.
