Cueva Negra, Montanejos, Archaeological cave site in Montanejos, Spain.
Cueva Negra is an archaeological cave in Montanejos with a main entrance about 26 by 10 meters wide, opening into a spacious underground chamber. Large stone blocks inside create a complex structure within the cave system.
Excavations in the 1930s uncovered Neolithic tools, flint objects, and pottery pieces from early periods of human habitation. These discoveries confirmed that the site was used by prehistoric people.
The blackened ceiling comes from fires that early inhabitants lit inside, suggesting they spent time there and used the space as shelter. This visible evidence reveals how prehistoric people adapted these natural caves for their needs.
The cave sits about 800 meters from Montanejos village and can be reached by hiking a steep trail. Sturdy shoes and adequate time are important for the uphill walk.
Inside, massive stone blocks create natural niches and corridor-like structures that give the cave a distinctive character. This makes it one of the larger cave chambers found in the Valencia region.
