Ecoherbes Park, Botanical garden in L'Ampolla, Spain
Ecoherbes Park is a botanical garden in L'Ampolla, a coastal town in the province of Tarragona, within the Terres de l'Ebre Biosphere Reserve. The site holds more than 400 species of medicinal, aromatic and culinary plants from many parts of the world, grown in labelled beds.
The garden opened on June 20, 2015, the day before the summer solstice, with the aim of making plant knowledge accessible to the public. The land it sits on still has old dry stone walls and ancient olive trees that reflect the farming history of this coastal area.
A section called the Witches' Corner contains toxic plants linked to old healing practices and is kept separate from the rest. The labels on each bed give both the common and scientific name of every plant and explain where it comes from and how it has been used.
The garden is located at Urb. Sant Pere 1 in L'Ampolla and is easy to reach by car. Guided tours in Spanish and Catalan last about an hour and are a good way to get the most out of the plant collections.
Ecoherbes Park is said to be the only botanical garden of its kind in the whole of Catalonia, with a dedicated seed bank for preserving rare species. The seeds are grown on site in a nursery that also serves to test how plants adapt to different climate conditions.
