Castellet, Hamlet in Castellet i la Gornal, Spain
Castellet is a hamlet in the municipality of Castellet i la Gornal, in the province of Barcelona, Spain. It sits on a hill above the Foix Reservoir and is made up of old stone buildings and narrow streets surrounded by vineyards and open countryside.
The hamlet grew around the castle of Sant Esteve, which was once part of a line of fortresses built to guard the area against invaders coming from the south. The castle fell into ruin over the centuries before being restored in the early 20th century by Josep de Peray i March.
The name Castellet is the Catalan diminutive for "castle," a direct reference to the old fortress that sits above the village. The restaurant El Barretet, whose name means "the little hat" in Catalan, shows how the local language stays present in everyday life.
The hamlet is easiest to reach by car, as public transport nearby is limited to a train and then a taxi from the town of L'Arboç. Paths around the reservoir start from the parking area near the village and are easy to walk.
The Foix Reservoir to the south was built over a hundred years ago to water the surrounding vineyards, and it is now a protected area where herons and cormorants can be spotted year-round. What began as a farming project has quietly become one of the better bird-watching spots in the area.
