Platja de Tamariu is a sandy beach in the southern part of Palafrugell with a 180-meter shoreline and soft golden sand. Along the shore stands a promenade lined with Mediterranean pine trees and restaurant terraces.
Tamariu grew around a small fishing harbour on this cove in the municipality of Palafrugell, on the Costa Brava. Fishing remained the base of the settlement until the 20th century, when holidaymakers from Girona and Barcelona began spending summers here. The white houses along the back of the beach and the boats pulled onto the sand recall that fishing origin.
Tamariu's name is traced to the Catalan words for the tamarisk shrubs that once grew around the cove. The beach remains a working landing spot: small white boats are pulled up directly onto the sand beside sunbathers, and the flat-roofed white houses along its back edge belong to the village that grew around this fishing cove.
The beach has showers, restrooms, and lifeguard coverage during the swimming season from June through September, with boat rentals and sailing lessons available. Visitors arriving outside this window should know these services will not be in operation.
Tamariu lies on the Costa Brava in the province of Girona, about 600 km east of Madrid, and the beach faces east over the Mediterranean. The name Tamariu is also used for the surrounding village, which the sources give as an alternative name for the beach itself.
