Teatro del Barrio, Cooperative theater in Lavapies, Madrid, Spain
Teatro del Barrio is a theater in Madrid with two performance spaces of different sizes. The main hall seats about 130 people, while the smaller cafe-style space holds roughly 60 viewers.
The theater was founded in 2013 out of the social movements of 2011, initiated by actor Alberto San Juan. It took over the space of a former theater venue called Sala Triangulo.
The space is run by neighbors and focuses on performances that explore questions about power and justice in society. Audiences often gather afterward to discuss what they have witnessed together.
The theater is located at Calle Zurita 20 and is easily reachable from the Antón Martín and Lavapiés metro stations. Wheelchair access is limited, so visitors with mobility needs should contact the venue beforehand.
The theater operates as a cooperative where people become members by making financial contributions to support its work. This structure means the community is directly involved in keeping the place alive.
