Salobral, Wetland and seasonal lagoon in Luque, Spain
Lagune de Salobral is a shallow seasonal wetland near the town of Luque in the province of Córdoba. It sits in a wide, open dip in the countryside, with soft muddy edges and low plants growing around the water.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, people tried several times to drain the lagoon and turn the land to other uses, but these efforts failed. Later, in 1989, it was named a natural reserve to protect the birds that stop here.
Local school groups sometimes come here to learn how a wetland works and to see waterfowl up close. Visiting families often pause at the edges, pointing out birds and listening for frogs among the reeds.
The ground around the water can be soft and muddy, so shoes that can get dirty are a good idea. Walking slowly on the higher edges gives the best views without disturbing the birds.
Next to the lagoon runs an old railway line, and you can still see the remains of a loading platform called Collado de las Arcas. It was once used to move minerals from nearby deposits, leaving a quiet trace of the area's mining past.
