Vallcarca bridge, Iron-reinforced concrete viaduct in Gràcia district, Spain
Vallcarca bridge connects two elevated areas across a former gulley, featuring decorative elements including four groups of winged lions with Catalan shields. The structure is made of steel-reinforced concrete and runs between the Coll and Putxet hills, accommodating both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Completed in 1923, this engineering project by architect Miquel Pasqual Tintorer marked a turning point for the region. The bridge transformed isolated summer residences into a connected urban neighborhood and enabled the development of Gràcia.
The structure displays Art Nouveau peaks and Art Deco panels that reflect the artistic styles popular when it was built in Barcelona. This blend of styles makes it a visual example of the design trends of that era.
The bridge is located at Carrer de Gomis 2 and is freely accessible to foot and vehicle traffic at all times. The structure is stable and well-maintained, making it a safe passage between the two hills.
Two semi-circular balconies interrupt the continuous railing and offer viewing points over Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. These quiet observation areas are easy to overlook despite offering broad views across the city.
