Church of the Sacred Heart, Catholic church in Melilla, Spain
The Church of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic religious building in Melilla featuring Romanesque design and a basilica floor plan with three naves. The tower holds three bells and four clock faces, while the interior contains modern electrical systems, sound equipment, and a combination of golden lamps with crystal chandeliers.
Construction began in 1911 and the building was completed in 1918 under architect Fernando Guerrero Strachan, with funding from government support and parishioner donations. The three bells were blessed in 1917, shortly before the structure fully opened to the community.
The church reflects Spanish Catholic traditions through its multiple altars dedicated to religious figures such as the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Conception, and Saint Joseph. These devotion spaces show which spiritual figures hold special importance for worshippers here.
The building can accommodate around 2,000 people and offers good accessibility with modern infrastructure. The interior lighting and speaker systems create comfortable conditions for religious gatherings.
Two of the three bells in the tower have special names: one is called the Sacred Heart and another is named the Virgin of Victory, highlighting their significance in local devotion. These named bells have been part of the city's soundscape since their blessing in 1917.
