Antiguo Economato Militar, Art Nouveau military supply building in Melilla, Spain
The Antiguo Economato Militar is a two-story building with ornamental flower patterns, circular decorative elements, and vertical lines across its facade. The construction uses solid stone walls and brick reinforced with iron beams inside.
The building was constructed in 1907 with an eclectic style and underwent major renovation in 1914 under architect Enrique Nieto. This redesign incorporated the original structures with the modern decorative elements of the time.
The building shows how the Spanish in Melilla around 1900 mixed modern European styles with practical military needs. You can still see this blend today in the decorated facades and the sturdy construction.
The building is located on Avenida Juan Carlos I Rey and is easy to spot from the street. As a protected heritage site, you can view and photograph the facade from outside to appreciate the architectural details.
The central balcony has a distinctive semicircular shape flanked by columns. This curved geometry with its prominent frieze and protruding cornice sets the building apart from other structures in the city.
