Playa Abama, Sandy beach in Guia de Isora, Spain.
Playa Abama is a small sandy beach in the municipality of Guía de Isora, on the southwestern coast of Tenerife, set inside a natural cove. The pale sand contrasts with the dark volcanic rock that frames the bay on both sides, giving the spot a clear and recognizable shape.
The beach was developed in the early 2000s as part of the construction of the Ritz-Carlton Abama Hotel, and it was designed from the start as an amenity for the resort. Before that, this stretch of the southwestern coast was mainly agricultural land with banana plantations reaching close to the sea.
Spanish law guarantees public access to all beaches, so Playa Abama remains open to everyone despite being part of a private resort. Visitors who arrive independently often find themselves sharing the cove with hotel guests, which gives the place a mixed and relaxed feel.
The beach can be reached on foot from the parking area or by using the hotel tram service, and the walk takes around 20 minutes. There is little natural shade along the way and on the sand, so bringing sun protection and water is a good idea.
The sand at Playa Abama is not volcanic black like on many other Tenerife beaches, but a lighter golden tone, which comes from imported sand rather than the local geology. This makes the color of the beach stand out compared to the dark lava rock surroundings.
