Torre de Teodomiro, Archaeological site and monument in Aranga, Spain.
Torre de Teodomiro is an archaeological site located on Monte do Gato featuring remains of an elliptical fortified wall structure. The visible traces indicate where a defensive construction once stood, distributed across the sloping terrain.
A ruler of the Suebian kingdom ordered this fortification built around 550 and named it after the local parish. The structure was part of the early medieval defensive network in this region.
The site holds connections to Bishop Teodomiro, who discovered Saint James' remains, leading to the establishment of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
The site can be reached by following the medieval route connecting towns in the surrounding area. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground is uneven and covered with vegetation in places.
Geographical analysis and fieldwork in the early 2020s revealed structural remains that had been hidden beneath vegetation for centuries. This discovery surprised researchers who had previously assumed all traces had vanished completely.
