Old Ceuta railway station, Railway station in Ceuta, Spain.
The Old Ceuta railway station is a railway building with white facades, square windows, and horseshoe arches constructed from solid brick in an eclectic style. The structure sits close to the port and displays a carefully detailed architecture with classical elements.
The building was constructed between 1916 and 1918 under engineer Julio Rodríguez Roda for the Ceuta-Tetuan railway line. The route closed in 1958, having shaped regional transport for over four decades.
The station building mixes elements from the Tangier region with Neo-Arabic influences, reflecting the multicultural identity of this Spanish city in North Africa. The architectural details tell the story of long-standing exchange between Europe and Africa at this location.
The building stands close to the Port of Ceuta and is easily reached on foot. Today it is gradually being transformed to serve as a cultural center and headquarters for the Convivencia Prize Foundation.
The site preserves an original Alco locomotive called Ceuta that underwent restoration in 2022 and represents an important piece of railway history. This working locomotive displays the technical craftsmanship from the early railway era.
