Casa Castanyer, Neoclassical residential building in Sant Pere Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Spain.
Casa Castanyer is a three-story residential building with semi-circular archways that open into a central courtyard. A staircase rises within this inner space, framed by Ionic columns that support the upper levels.
Architects Ignasi March and Antonio Ginesi designed the building in 1805 for a lawyer and musician named Gaietà de Gispert i Seriol. The owner passed away before construction was completed.
The building served as headquarters for Atheneum Polytechnicum during the 1930s, contributing to Barcelona's worker education movement and social development.
The building has protected cultural status and can be viewed and photographed from the adjacent streets. Access to the interior is typically restricted, but the facade and courtyard are visible from outside.
The building retains its original long balcony with decorative openings above the lintel, a rare example of 19th-century Neoclassical residential design in Barcelona. These details showcase the craftsmanship of the period and set it apart from other structures of its era.
