Centro Canalejas, Commercial and residential complex in Central Madrid, Spain.
Centro Canalejas is a mixed-use complex in the heart of Madrid, joining seven historic buildings around Calle de Alcalá. It contains a luxury hotel, private residences, shops, and restaurants across several floors.
Several of the buildings date to the late 1800s and originally served as financial and commercial offices. After falling into disuse in the early 2000s, they were brought together and converted into a single complex.
The facades of the complex show original late 19th-century stone carvings alongside modern glass surfaces, making the contrast between old and new easy to spot. Inside, the original skylights have been kept and still flood the galleries with natural light.
The complex sits directly on Calle de Alcalá and is easy to reach on foot from nearby metro stations. Those who want to explore all sections should allow extra time, as the connecting passages between buildings cover a lot of ground.
The building at Alcalá 14 sits at the geometric center of the complex, from which the other buildings fan out in a radial pattern. This unusual layout was a deliberate design choice to control the flow of movement between the different structures.
