Cartuja de Talamanca

Cartuja de Talamanca is an agricultural estate with farming buildings and structures from the 16th century in Talamanca de Jarama. The complex features a central structure with a cloister, chapel, winery, stables, and several auxiliary buildings that form a cohesive historical complex.

The monastery began construction in the 16th century under the Carthusian Order from El Paular, with major renovations completed in 1703 under Fray Juan de Aguilar. This later work transformed the appearance and layout of the entire complex.

The chapel displays religious wall paintings that reflect local building traditions using brick, buttresses, and ceramic lintels common in this region. These elements show how craftspeople worked with materials available in the area over centuries.

The complex is located at Calle Viento 2 in Talamanca de Jarama and has undergone extensive restoration to preserve its original structures. Visitors should expect that some areas may have limited access due to ongoing conservation work.

Archaeological surveys beneath the grounds have revealed clues to buried structures from earlier construction hidden under the current buildings. These subsurface remains suggest the site experienced multiple phases of development over time.
