Marqués del Duero, Bronze equestrian statue in El Viso, Madrid, Spain.
The Marques del Duero is a bronze equestrian monument showing General Manuel Gutierrez de la Concha on horseback in the Plaza del Doctor Maranon. The entire sculpture was cast from melted cannons, giving the work both physical weight and symbolic meaning through its materials.
The monument was erected in 1885 to honor a general who fought in two major conflicts in Spanish history. Its creation came after these wars ended, serving as a lasting reminder of his military service.
The reliefs on the pedestal show scenes from the general's military service in Portugal, telling his story through sculptured images. These carved panels give visitors a sense of his personal achievements and struggles.
The monument stands in an open public plaza and is accessible from all sides, allowing visitors to view it from different angles. The relief panels are clearly visible and reward a closer look to appreciate the carved details.
This was the first equestrian monument cast in bronze in Spain since the 1600s, marking an important return to this sculptural tradition. Its funding came from a nationwide public campaign, showing how much the general's memory meant to ordinary people at the time.
