Cuevas de Fuentes de León, Natural monument and cave system in Fuentes de León, Spain
Cuevas de Fuentes de León is a cave system with seven interconnected caverns spread across a large protected area. The caves display dramatic limestone formations including stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal structures, along with a substantial underground lake.
People visited these caves starting in the Stone Age and continued to use them through several later periods until the Iron Age. Archaeological finds show that ancient inhabitants lived here and buried their dead in the caverns.
The caves served as a refuge for people and animals across many centuries. Visitors can see engravings on the walls that show how ancient inhabitants used this place and lived here.
Entry to the caves requires advance booking through the local authorities and a guided tour is mandatory. Only three of the seven caverns are open to visitors and visits are limited to specific days of the week.
The cave system is home to two rare bat species that are strictly protected and found nowhere else in the area. These animals have adapted completely to life in total darkness and play an important role in the underground food chain.
