Palacio Ampuero

Palacio Ampuero is a residential structure in Getxo built on a promontory overlooking the bay, featuring stone walls and neo-Gothic decorative details throughout. Today it functions as separate residential units and includes modern amenities like underground parking beneath the historic structure.

The building was designed in 1928 by architect Manuel María Smith for businessman and politician José Joaquín Ampuero y del Río during a period of industrial expansion in Biscay. Late 20th-century renovations transformed it into separate residential units to meet contemporary needs.

The palace shows how wealthy families in Biscay chose to build their homes during the early 20th century, with details that reflected regional pride and status. When you walk around it, you notice how the design mixes local building traditions with grand European styles that impressed high society.

The building sits on elevated ground in the Neguri district and can be spotted from several angles overlooking the bay, making it relatively easy to locate. The surrounding area has good walking paths and is accessible on foot, especially when approaching from the beach or harbor area.

The building occupies a narrow peninsula jutting into the Bay of Abra, and its medieval-looking style contrasts intriguingly with its relatively recent 1928 construction date.
