Silla del Moro, Military fortification in Granada, Spain
Silla del Moro is a military fortification situated on a hilltop above the Alhambra in Granada. It consists of tower remains and defensive walls that spread across the site overlooking the city and surrounding mountains.
The site dates from the Nasrid period and served as a watchtower protecting the Generalife palace complex during Islamic rule in Granada. This structure played an important role in a wider defensive system that monitored the royal compounds.
The fortress displays the building style of medieval Islamic times in this region. You can see how the walls and towers were positioned strategically to watch over the lower palace compounds.
You can reach the site from Plaza Nueva by following a trail that winds through the hillside terrain. The path is steep and requires good walking shoes, especially in wet conditions.
The fort contains underground passages beneath its structures, with their original function still unclear. Archaeologists have not yet fully explored or explained these hidden spaces.
