Domus Academica, Student housing complex in Kamppi, Finland
Domus Academica is a student housing complex in central Helsinki comprising two residential buildings with rental apartments, a restaurant, student facilities, and office spaces. The complex provides underground parking, bicycle storage, and direct access to public transportation.
Architect Pauli Salomaa designed the building in 1952, with expansion work completed in 1968 to increase student housing capacity. These two construction phases shaped the complex as it exists today.
Interior architects Ilmari and Annikki Tapiovaara created the original furnishings, with the renowned Domus chair becoming a Finnish design standard that still defines spaces throughout the building today. The furniture choices reflect a commitment to functional beauty in everyday student life.
The central location in Helsinki makes it easy to reach nearby shops, restaurants, and schools in the surrounding area. Visitors and residents can use the plentiful public transportation options to move quickly around the city.
An underground passage connects this complex to the neighboring Domus Gaudium building, creating a hidden link between student facilities. Many visitors overlook this subterranean walkway during their visit.
