Maria Hospital, Historical hospital building in Kamppi district, Helsinki, Finland.
Maria Hospital is a former hospital complex in the Kamppi district of Helsinki, Finland, made up of several connected red brick buildings along Lapinlahdenkatu street. The buildings surround a central courtyard and are now used as a mixed office and event venue.
The complex was built in the 19th century as a military hospital for Russian troops and named after Maria Feodorovna, the wife of Tsar Alexander III. After Finnish independence, it continued as a city hospital before being converted for other uses in the 21st century.
The site now hosts Maria 01, one of the largest startup campuses in northern Europe, where people working in technology gather daily. Walking through the buildings, visitors see open offices, shared spaces, and event venues that have turned the old hospital into a place for collaboration.
The site is open to visitors and easy to explore on foot. The central courtyard is a good starting point from which you can reach the different buildings and passages across the grounds.
Although the site sits in the middle of the city, it hides a small park called Marianpuisto tucked between the brick buildings, which many visitors never notice. This inner garden was originally designed for patient recovery and now serves as a quiet corner inside a busy work environment.
