Bomarsund Bridge, bridge in Finland
Bomarsund Bridge is a road bridge in Sund municipality on the Aland Islands that connects the village of Bomarsund to Prästö island. It spans about 81 meters with two traffic lanes and distinctive steel arches that rise 12 meters above the water surface.
The original bridge was built in 1958 but eventually became too small for growing traffic. A new bridge was completed in 2022 and opened to traffic on December 14 that year, replacing the outdated structure that had reached its capacity.
The bridge connects communities in a sparsely populated island area, allowing locals and visitors to easily reach the quiet paths and coastal spots of Prästö. It is part of daily life on the Aland Islands and shows how simple infrastructure brings together small, scattered settlements.
The bridge is easily passable for pedestrians and vehicles, directly connecting both sides of the area. Visitors who want to explore the surroundings will find it a good starting point for hikes along the Prästö trail.
The bridge was officially inaugurated in April 2023 with a celebration featuring a one-kilometer race across it and free food for visitors. A notable detail is that it vibrates slightly in strong wind, but these vibrations are completely harmless and do not affect safety.
