Parikkala Sculpture Park, Outdoor sculpture garden in Koitsanlahti, Finland.
Parikkala Sculpture Park is an outdoor sculpture garden in Finland with roughly 500 concrete statues spread across half a hectare of land. The figures depict people in a wide range of poses and activities, from everyday scenes to more complex physical positions.
Artist Veijo Rönkkönen began the project in 1961 using his first paycheck from a paper mill to buy apple trees and concrete for his vision. Over decades, this grew into an enormous collection that became his lifework and passion.
The sculptures include many figures performing yoga positions, showing how the artist brought global physical practices into his work. Walking through, visitors notice these poses among the trees and can recognize many familiar movements from different traditions.
The park sits at Tiviäntie 21-23 and welcomes visitors every day throughout the year at no cost, open around the clock. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground can be uneven in places as you walk among the sculptures.
Several concrete statues contain real human teeth, an unconventional material that gives them a distinctive character. Visitors often notice this surprising detail when examining the sculptures up close.
