Reuman sairaala, Specialized rheumatology hospital in Heinola, Finland.
Reuman sairaala is a former specialist hospital in Heinola, Finland, built to treat rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions. The complex consists of several connected buildings set in a green area of the town, and today it serves as a wellness and rehabilitation center.
The hospital opened in 1946 and quickly became one of Finland's leading centers for rheumatic and joint disease treatment. It operated for over 60 years before closing in 2010, after which the buildings were converted to their current use.
The site is listed as a Cultural Heritage Site of National Significance in Finland, which means its buildings are carefully maintained in their original form. Visitors can still see the architectural style typical of mid-20th century Finnish institutional design.
The site sits in a central part of Heinola and can be reached on foot or by local bus. Since the buildings are now used as a rehabilitation center, it is worth checking in advance which areas are open to the public before visiting inside.
The hospital had its own classroom so that children undergoing long treatment stays could keep up with their schooling. This was an unusual arrangement for the time and shows how the facility thought about the everyday lives of its younger patients.
