Montta power plant, Hydroelectric power station in Muhos, Finland
Montta power plant is a hydroelectric facility on the Oulujoki river that generates electricity using three Kaplan turbines. The water drops about 12 meters to power these turbines and produce electricity for the surrounding region.
The plant was completed in 1955 as part of Finland's major postwar hydroelectric expansion. It became one facility in a chain of dams and power stations along the Oulujoki that together formed a vital energy system for northern Finland.
The structure was designed by renowned Finnish architect Aarne Ervi, who combined industrial function with mid-20th century design principles. His approach shows how power plants were viewed as architectural objects in that era, not merely as functional buildings.
The site is located in Muhos along the Oulujoki and is easily accessible by road, with typical Finnish river scenery surrounding the area. Visitors should expect variable weather and wear sturdy shoes, as the ground can be wet and boggy throughout the year.
The plant sits as the second facility along the Oulujoki system, positioned upstream from the older Merikoski plant. This arrangement shows how the entire river system was strategically developed to maximize energy generation from the flowing water.
