Mustavuori, Esker in Kalkku, Tampere, Finland.
Mustavuori is an esker in the Kalkku district of Tampere, Finland, with four ski slopes and a rock wall roughly 100 feet (30 meters) high. The hill forms part of a longer ridge that runs through the western side of the city.
During the First World War, Russian forces dug a network of defensive trenches across the hill to guard against possible German advances. Traces of these fortifications can still be found on the ground today.
Mustavuori draws families and young people to its slopes in winter for skiing and sledding. In summer, the same slopes attract mountain bikers, giving the place a year-round presence in local outdoor life.
The hill is located in the Kalkku district and is easy to reach by bus from central Tampere. In winter, it is worth arriving early in the day to make the most of the daylight, as Nordic winters are short.
The rock wall comes with anchors already fixed in place, so climbers do not need to bring their own safety gear to use it. This makes the wall one of the few freely accessible climbing spots in the area.
