Pumpulikirkko, Canyon formation in Rautavaara, Finland
Pumpulikirkko is a canyon formation in Rautavaara featuring steep walls and a rock crevice that opens into a spacious hollow surrounded by vertical rock faces. The site has a distinctive bowl-like structure carved into the bedrock, creating an enclosed natural space.
This formation was created during the last Ice Age roughly 10,000 years ago when melting waters carved through solid rock and produced its distinctive pothole structure. The natural erosion process gradually shaped the steep walls and unique geometry visible today.
The site earned its name Cotton Church from its remarkable acoustics, which made it a favorite location for choral performances and wedding ceremonies. Visitors come to experience how sound travels distinctly through the rock walls in this natural amphitheater.
The site is accessible by a hiking trail of about 1.3 kilometers from the Konttimäki parking area located at Pumpulikirkontie 319 in Rautavaara. The path is well-marked and leads directly through forest to this natural formation.
The area protects two rare mammal species under Nature Directives: the Eurasian otter and the Flying Squirrel. Visitors hike through a habitat that serves as a refuge for these elusive animals.
