Vääräkoski groundwood and board mill, factory in Ähtäri, Finland
The Vääräkoski groundwood and board mill is a protected industrial facility located beside rapids on a Finnish river. The brick and timber buildings contain original machinery and equipment from the late 1800s, preserved in near their working condition.
The mill opened in 1898 and quickly became important to Finland's forest and paper industry. In 1901, it acquired one of the country's earliest cardboard machines, marking its role in the nation's industrial development.
The name refers to the rapids on the Hyvölänjoki River that powered the mill operations. Visitors today can see how the workplace was connected to the natural landscape and how water power shaped the daily rhythm of work.
The site is easily accessible by car from the town of Ähtäri and is often included in regional heritage tours. Visitors should expect uneven floors and steep stairs when exploring the historic buildings.
The cardboard machine installed in 1901 is over 120 years old and still operational. It was the fifth such machine in all of Finland, showing how advanced small mills could be in that era.
