Hamburger Börs, demolished hotel building
Hamburger Börs is a hotel on Kauppiaskatu in central Turku, made up of two clearly different wings: an older part with Art Nouveau details and stained glass, and a newer building added in 2021. The two wings sit side by side, giving the property a split character between old stonework and fresh construction.
The hotel opened in 1894 and quickly became the leading address in Turku, offering modern conveniences like private telephones and electricity from generators. Scandic Hotels took over in 2019 and finished a major rebuild two years later.
The name Hamburger Börs comes from a Hamburg stock exchange building that impressed an early owner enough to bring the name to Finland. The hotel sits at the center of daily life in Turku, drawing both locals and travelers who use the area as a meeting point near the main square.
The hotel is a short walk from Turku's central market square, as well as nearby restaurants and museums. The train station is reachable on foot, and local bus stops are close by for getting around the rest of the city.
Before becoming a hotel focused on accommodation, the building housed a cinema called Rialto and a nightclub where Finnish and international artists performed. That past as an entertainment spot is no longer visible today, but it shaped the building's place in the city for decades.
