Nikkilä Hospital, Former psychiatric hospital in Sipoo, Finland.
Nikkilä Hospital is a former psychiatric facility in Sipoo comprising multiple buildings designed in Jugend architectural style, distinguished by decorative details and generous window openings. The grounds have been partly converted into residential apartments within the Eastern River Park neighborhood.
The hospital was founded in 1914 by Helsinki and treated up to 1,200 psychiatric patients across its operations. It closed in 1999 after more than 80 years of providing mental health services.
The complex served as a center for art therapy, accumulating patient artworks created during their time there. These pieces reflect the creative expression of individuals who received care within the facility.
The grounds are located in Sipoo and now serve residential purposes with some areas viewable from outside. Walking around the site is the best way to observe the architectural details of the preserved structures.
The complex operated like a self-contained settlement with its own bakery, farm, fire brigade, and utility systems for heating, electricity, and water. This infrastructure allowed the facility to function with complete independence.
