Kuolemankuopat, Natural depressions in Jyväskylä, Finland

Kuolemankuopat are two natural depressions, also known as kettles, located in the Seppälänkangas area of Jyväskylä, Finland. The larger of the two reaches about 25 meters (82 feet) deep and nearly 200 meters (656 feet) wide, with steep, open sides rising above the surrounding sandy forest floor.

The kettles were formed at the end of the last Ice Age, when large blocks of glacial ice became buried under sand and gravel, then slowly melted away, leaving deep hollows in the ground. This process shaped the terrain over thousands of years and produced the forms that are visible today.

The site is reached by marked trails starting near the Bilteman takaa area, making it easy to navigate on foot. Staying on the paths and keeping a safe distance from the edges of the depressions is advisable, as the ground can be uneven and loose near the rims.

The name Kuolemankuopat means 'death holes' in Finnish, a name that has sparked local curiosity and stories for generations, though its exact origin remains unclear. One common explanation points to the steep, shadowy walls that drop sharply into the ground, giving the site an unsettling appearance to those who first encounter it.
