Kylän portti, Concrete sculpture in Viiskulma Square, Lahti, Finland
Kylän portti is a concrete sculpture in Viiskulma Square featuring six prefabricated elements assembled into a monumental gateway form. The structure stands approximately 20 feet (6 meters) tall and incorporates a reddish-brown surface that gives it a weathered appearance.
The sculpture won the City of Lahti's art competition in 2020 and was installed in May 2021. It was created to serve as a directional marker toward Malva Museum.
The sculpture represents the connection between urban landscapes and nature, functioning as a gateway that marks the entrance to the cultural district.
View the sculpture from the center of the square to see its full form and details clearly. Walking around the installation from different angles reveals how the gateway shape changes perspective and how light interacts with the aged surface.
The pillars were intentionally treated with specialized surface techniques to achieve a naturally weathered appearance rather than looking newly built. The asymmetrical arch designs mean each section presents a distinct visual presence when viewed from different angles.
