Montée de la Grande Côte, Historical footpath in Croix-Rousse district, Lyon, France.
Montée de la Grande-Côte is a steep footpath in Lyon connecting Rue des Pierres Plantées to the Grande-Côte esplanade. The route rises through mixed architectural styles with sections of stairs and sloped walkways.
Before 1750, this path served as the main connection between Lyon and northern regions like Dombes, Bresse, and Alsace. It was the central trade route crossing the northern hillside.
The street houses a lively art scene with workshops, galleries, and design studios where local artists display and sell their work. People use this place as a hub for creative activity and as a meeting point with visitors.
The path is partly pedestrian-only and offers a direct climb from downtown Lyon to the Croix-Rousse plateau. Wear comfortable shoes, as the uneven surface with stairs can be tiring.
The climb presents stone buildings spanning five centuries of urban development, from structures dating to the 16th century through the 19th century. These temporal layers are visible in the streetscape and tell of different eras of local building.
