Aulnay-sous-Bois, Residential commune in Seine-Saint-Denis, France
Aulnay-sous-Bois is a residential commune in Seine-Saint-Denis, spreading northeast of Paris and linking several neighborhoods with industrial zones and some parks. Within the commune, apartment buildings alternate with lower structures, crossed by roads that lead to different local centers.
In the 20th century the area shifted from a rural village to an urban settlement as factories and housing projects appeared. After 1968 population growth slowed and the structure of the commune continued to change with the decline of some industrial firms.
The name comes from a forest where alder trees grew, pointing back to the green past of the commune. Today you meet people from many backgrounds in the streets, who bring different languages and daily routines to the public squares and local markets.
The future Grand Paris Express station near Europe roundabout will shorten the trip to La Défense and create a new link to the center. Until it opens, buses and commuter trains remain the main options to reach the commune.
The largest operational center of Grand Paris Express sits here, coordinating two lines with maintenance facilities and a central control room. From outside you see only part of the technical infrastructure that manages train movements across the entire network.
