Bourgoin-Jallieu, Administrative commune in Isère, France
Bourgoin-Jallieu is an administrative unit in the Isère department between Lyon and the Alps along the Bourbre river. The settlement consists of a main center and several surrounding residential areas following the river valley with town hall, schools and local shops.
Two neighboring communes merged in 1965 into a single administrative unit under the combined name. Both places had separate administrations before and developed independently along the river since medieval times.
The name combines two formerly separate towns and still shows in the different neighborhoods on either side of the river. Residents shop in the center and use the public squares for weekly markets and everyday meetings.
The municipal office sits centrally and can be visited on weekdays for administrative matters. Roads around the center lead to residential neighborhoods and the riverbank for walks.
A well-known French crime writer from the 20th century was born here and grew up in the streets of this place. His humorous novels about a Paris detective became very popular in France and brought literary recognition to the town.
