Keroman Submarine Base, World War II submarine base in Lorient, France
Keroman Submarine Base is a former military installation for underwater vessels in Lorient. The three connected blocks rise from the harbor with thick roofs and dark openings facing the water, built from reinforced concrete and granite.
German forces built this facility between 1941 and 1943 as a base for Atlantic operations. The bunkers provided shelter for dozens of submarines during the Battle of the Atlantic.
The former military installation now functions as Lorient La Base, integrating maritime heritage exhibitions with the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly sailing center.
Access is through Block K3, where visitors walk through concrete corridors and view the Flore submarine. Interactive displays explain technical operations and onboard life during the war years.
A survival simulator from 1942 trained crews for emergency escapes from sunken submarines. The machine replicated water pressure and underwater conditions with working mechanisms.
