Canet-en-Roussillon

Canet-en-Roussillon is a coastal commune on the Mediterranean with a broad stretch of fine sand beach. The town extends along the water's edge for several kilometers, with the Canigou mountain rising in the distance.

Development as a beach destination began in the mid-1800s when the first sea bathing settlements were established. These early foundations shaped the course toward becoming the coastal community it is today.

The local Catalan identity appears in weekly markets where you can find regional products and crafts, as well as in traditional festivals held throughout the year. These traditions blend Mediterranean coastal life with mountain influences and shape how people here celebrate and gather.

The town has the Oniria aquarium with hundreds of fish species and marine animals where visitors can get close to Mediterranean sea life. The aquarium is easy to locate and spreads across several clear exhibition areas.

The community preserves an old fishing boat called La Pierrette that underwent extensive restoration work. This vessel speaks to the long maritime heritage and stands as a rare example of the local fishing traditions.
