Château de l'Esparrou

Château de l'Esparrou, Historical castle in Canet-en-Roussillon, France

Château de l'Esparrou is a four-level castle in Canet-en-Roussillon with an underground level, ground floor, first floor, and second floor containing various rooms. The structure covers about 400 square meters and sits above the northeastern corner of Canet-Saint-Nazaire lagoon.

The castle was built between 1889 and 1891 when Joseph Sauvy, president of the Perpignan commercial court, hired Danish architect Viggo Dorph-Petersen to design it. This era of industrial growth and wealth shaped the building's style and character.

The castle houses a music room, winter garden, and library that reflect how a wealthy family lived during the late 1800s. These spaces show the interests and habits of the people who called this place home.

The castle sits above the Canet-Saint-Nazaire lagoon and can be reached via departmental road D 81A. It is best to check current access conditions and opening times before planning a visit.

The property name appears in 17th-century documents as Lo Sparro and El Esparro, reflecting Germanic linguistic roots in the region. This ancient naming reveals how different cultures shaped the area over centuries.
