Abbaye Saint-Corneille, Gothic monastery in Compiègne, France
The monastery features a preserved 13th-century cloister with stone arches that demonstrates medieval French architectural design and construction techniques.
Founded in 876 by Charles the Bald, the abbey transformed from a secular chapter to a Benedictine monastery in 1150 under Louis VI's direction.
The abbey stored important relics, including the Holy Shroud and the Veil of the Virgin, making it a central religious destination in medieval France.
The municipal library now occupies the former monastery buildings, allowing visitors to experience the historical structure while accessing modern services.
