Thoiry, Commune in the arrondissement of Rambouillet, Yvelines, France
Thoiry is a commune in the Yvelines department, within the arrondissement of Rambouillet, in the Île-de-France region west of Paris. The commune covers a mix of farmland, woodland, and a small village center with old stone and brick buildings along its main streets.
For centuries, Thoiry was mainly a farming settlement, shaped by the fields and small farms that still surround the village today. The construction of the Château de Thoiry during the Renaissance period brought the place wider recognition and drew visitors from beyond the local area.
The name Thoiry is pronounced [twaʁi] in French, which often surprises first-time visitors. The village streets are lined with stone and brick houses, many of them over a century old, giving the place a strong sense of continuity with its rural past.
The village center is easy to walk through, and the surrounding woodland and farmland offer good conditions for walking or cycling at any time of year. The main attractions nearby, such as the château and the zoo, are separate sites that are best visited with a plan, as the area is spread out.
In March 2024, Thoiry served as the starting point of a stage of the Paris-Nice cycling race, an unexpected role for a village of its size. This kind of stage start brings a brief burst of activity to a place that otherwise runs at a very slow, steady pace.
