Roquemartine, Medieval fortress in Eyguières, France.
Roquemartine is a castle standing on limestone cliffs in Eyguières, featuring the remains of defensive towers, stone walls, and an adjacent church dedicated to Saint-Sauveur. The site shows evidence of multiple fortified sections that once worked together as an integrated defense system.
The fortress was built in the 12th century by the Albe de Tarascon family and controlled a key route between the Durance valley and the Alpilles mountains. Its strategic position allowed it to monitor trade and movement in the region throughout the medieval period.
The castle received support from the Heritage Foundation in 2022 through the Heritage Lottery program to fund its preservation efforts.
Visitors can explore the ruins on their own, though access may vary depending on weather and maintenance work. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and watch carefully on the uneven ground around the cliffs.
The fortress was positioned to function as a natural toll gate, allowing its lord to collect fees from trading caravans passing below. These revenues went directly into improving and expanding the fortifications over time.
