Boulevard des Capucines, boulevard in Paris, France
The Boulevards des Capucines is one of the 'Grands Boulevards' in Paris, France. It was built over the former course of the Wall of Charles V and the Louis XIII wall, which were destroyed on the orders of Louis XIV. Before the French Revolution this street was known as the Rue Basse-du-Rempart. Its current name comes from a beautiful convent of Capuchin nuns that had a garden on the south side of the boulevard. This boulevard has several interesting sites. At the No. 1, stood the Neapolitan Café, renowned for its renowned for its writers, journalists and actors, such as Catulle Mendès, Jean Moréas, Armand Silvestre, and Laurent Tailhade. At the corner of the boulevard and the rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin, is a rotunda that has been kept intact, which used to be the site of the former Hotel de Montmorency. This hotel also housed a Théâtre du Vaudeville in 1869, later being taken over by Paramount Opéra movies in 1927 and rebranded Gaumont Opéra since 2007. This site still stands in testimony of the grand salon of the Hotel in the 18th century. At the No. 5 of the boulevard is the photographic studio of Pierre-Louis Pierson, who was the photographic collaborator of Virginia Oldoini, Countess di Castiglione. At the No. 7 was the Georama, which was built in 1825 and served to allow people to view the 'whole earth' within a sphere of 14 meters in diameter. This amazing structure entertained thousands and left many in awe. Jacques Offenbach lived at the No. 8 of the boulevard from 1876 until he passed away in 1880. At the No. 12 of boulevard the Grand Hotel was built on a former swamp-garden, whereas the No. 14 was the location of the Hotel Scribe and the former Grand Café where the first public showing of movies by Auguste and Louis Lumière took place. In conclusion, the Boulevards des Capucines is worth a visit if one is in Paris, given that it houses many interesting sites and carries cultural significance in regards to the remarkable people who have lived there and the amazing structures that have been erected.
