Café de la Paix, Historic restaurant near Opéra Garnier, Paris, France.

Café de la Paix is a restaurant near Opéra Garnier with gilded walls, ornate ceilings, and large windows facing the Place de l'Opéra. The dining room features classical architecture from the 1800s with multiple areas for eating and drinking.

The establishment opened in 1862 during the Second Empire and later became registered as a national heritage site. Its Napoleon III architectural elements survive to the present day.

Locals and travelers gather here to experience dining within richly decorated rooms that feel both formal and welcoming. The ornate interiors with gold accents and detailed ceilings create a setting where everyday meals become memorable occasions.

The location sits directly on the famous opera square and is easy to reach on foot; visitors find several public transit stations nearby. Daytime visits are usually more accessible than evening dining, as reservations for meals are important.

The dining room houses a glass winter garden that allows natural light from above, making the space feel bright and open. This glazed structure creates a special quality that blends classical surroundings with modern light.

Cafés of Paris: iconic addresses, listed interiors, and literary venues

Paris has several dozen historic cafés that have endured centuries, retaining their original decor and unique character. These establishments, some over three hundred years old, have hosted generations of artists, writers, and thinkers, making them places for creation and intellectual discussion. Their listed facades, velvet benches, and antique mirrors today testify to an era when cafés served as important social and cultural hubs. Le Procope, founded in 1686, remains the oldest operating café in Paris and has welcomed figures such as Voltaire, Diderot, and revolutionary leaders. On Boulevard Saint-Germain, Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots have marked 20th-century literary history by hosting Sartre, Beauvoir, and Hemingway. In Montparnasse, La Rotonde gathered Picasso and Modigliani in the 1910s, while La Closerie des Lilas became a meeting point for American writers of the lost generation. More recent but equally storied, Café de la Paix near the Opera and Angelina on Rue de Rivoli continue the tradition of grand Parisian establishments where visitors come for both the decor and the cuisine.

A very classic yet truly incredible place! For your business meetings or a drink with your partner, enjoy this stunning setting at the foot of the Opéra Garnier. It is also very nice to have breakfast there when Paris starts to fill with people.
