Bibliothèque-musée de l'Opéra

The Bibliothèque-musée de l'Opéra is a research library and exhibition space housed in the Palais Garnier, Paris's grand opera house. It displays documents, costumes, and stage designs that tell the story of French operatic production across generations.

The library was founded in 1866 as an archive for the Paris Opera, then opened a public museum section in 1881. The collections grew steadily to preserve works, plans, and memories of staged productions.

The name refers to the institution's role as keeper of operatic memory and French musical traditions. Visitors walk through rooms displaying costumes, posters, and stage designs that tell the story of productions spanning hundreds of years.

The facility is located in the Emperor's Rotunda section of the Palais Garnier and is easily accessible by metro. It is best to arrive early in the day to explore the collections without crowds.

The space was partly designed as an imperial apartment for Napoleon III but remained incomplete after his death in 1870. These historic rooms are now part of the visitor experience and give the place a personal historical character.
