The institution originated as the Paris Opera library in 1866 and opened its public museum section in 1881 under Charles Nuitter's leadership.
The collection contains 600,000 documents, including scores, librettos, photographs, and 2,500 scale models of stage sets from French operatic productions.
Located in the Rotonde de l'Empereur section of Palais Garnier, the facility operates from Monday through Saturday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
The museum occupies spaces originally designed for Napoleon III, including an imperial pavilion that remained incomplete after his death in 1870.
