Lans-en-Vercors is a small commune in the Vercors plateau region of Isère, located in a broad valley surrounded by forested mountains. The settlement spreads across several kilometers as scattered hamlets and houses rather than forming a concentrated village center.
The commune developed from gradual settlement of the Vercors plateau by farmers who used the highland terrain for livestock raising. Over time it remained a quiet mountain location whose economy relied on agriculture and eventually tourism.
The location is accessible by car via roads that connect the valley to surrounding higher elevations. Summer months are ideal for walking and exploring, while winter can bring challenging conditions with snow and restricted access.
