Malakoff – Rue Étienne-Dolet is an above-ground metro station on line 13, located in the town of Malakoff, just south of Paris. The tracks run at street level through a residential area, with a simple platform open to the sky.
Line 13 was extended southward in stages during the 20th century, bringing the metro to towns like Malakoff that had previously relied on other forms of transport. The area around the station grew as a working-class suburb of Paris, shaped largely by the arrival of rail connections.
The station takes its name from Étienne Dolet, a 16th-century French printer and scholar who was executed for his ideas. Most passengers pass through without knowing they are walking past a reference to one of the more dramatic figures in French literary history.
The platform is open to the elements, so it is worth checking the weather before heading out, especially in winter. Access is from Rue Guy-Môquet and nearby streets, and several bus lines stop close by for onward connections.
