Abbatiale Saint-Genou de Saint-Genou, Romanesque abbey church in Saint-Genou, France

The Abbaye Saint-Genou is a Romanesque abbey church at the center of the village of Saint-Genou, in the Indre department, listed as a historical monument. Of the original building, the choir, the apse, and parts of the transept still stand today, while the nave disappeared over the centuries.

The monastery was founded in 828 by a count of Bourges and his wife, then destroyed during Norman raids before being rebuilt at a new location at the end of the 10th century. The current church dates from the early 12th century, and the nave was taken down in the 17th century after it fell into disrepair.

The carved capitals inside the church show animals, foliage, and biblical scenes cut into the stone with great care. Two scenes stand out in particular: Daniel in the lions' den and the Adoration of the Magi, both still clearly visible today.

The church is open to visitors throughout the year and a visit takes roughly half an hour to walk through properly. It is worth checking in advance whether the building is open on the day you plan to go, as access times can vary.

Under the modern altar lies the tomb of Saint Genulphus, a 3rd-century bishop whose name gave the village its own name. The funerary slab still carries a dedication inscription, directly linking the burial to the founding story of this place.
