Église Saint-Étienne de Buzançais, Church in Buzançais, France

The église Saint-Étienne de Buzançais is a Neo-Gothic church in the center of Buzançais, a small town in the Indre department of central France. Inside, a nave with side aisles leads to a choir with an ambulatory that opens onto five small apsidal chapels at the far end.

An older church once stood in another part of Buzançais but fell into disrepair and was torn down to make way for the current town hall. The replacement was designed by architect Henri Dauvergne and consecrated in 1901, with the bell tower following much later in 1960.

The stained glass windows in the nave were made in the early 20th century by a glass painter from Tours named JP Florence and show local and regional saints. The light coming through them colors the interior in different ways depending on the time of day.

The church sits in the center of Buzançais and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets of town. Visiting outside of religious services allows more freedom to walk through the interior at your own pace.

The baptismal fonts in the chapel near the entrance date from the 18th century, making them far older than the building itself, since they were brought over from the church that was demolished. Nearby stand several statues from the same period, including a Virgin of the Trinity and a bishop saint.
