Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bellozanne

Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bellozanne is a former monastery built by the Premonstratensian order. The site is marked by an 18th-century gatehouse, farm buildings, and a former parish church that later served as a chapel.

The abbey was founded in 1198 and received royal recognition from Richard the Lionheart and King John. Over time the community lost influence due to economic shifts that weakened its position.

The name refers to a dedication to the Virgin Mary, which shaped the spiritual identity of the community. Walking through the grounds, you can sense how daily life revolved around prayer and agricultural work.

The grounds are generally open for viewing from the outside, though interior access is limited. To fully appreciate the abbey's history, plan to visit several nearby churches where its original artwork and sculptures are now housed.

French poet Pierre de Ronsard held the title of commendatory abbot here in the 16th century despite never residing at the monastery. This unusual appointment reveals how cultural figures were sometimes connected to declining religious institutions.
